The Clock on the Wall
*first published in The Offbeat Every day, They glare, they stare, they sigh No one likes my presence They all wish I weren’t so slow That my heart would beat to their drummer They hate how my hands Deliberately move They despise my ticks, All my clicks, my clacks, counting Too slowly their time I was built to help, to hold their place for them Consistent in my time I am never slow, nor fast I work all day, every night Even when those I serve have left I can stare into a room devoid of people, But they come back, They curse under their breaths They will my heart to speed to death They don’t know how quickly their time will come And in the end they will wish I had been just a little bit slower. |
