Experience -> Study Abroad
During the summer of 2012, I went to Busua in Ghana for 5 weeks as part of the program Teach on the Beach (TOB).
I spent five weeks being humbled, learning a lot about myself and other cultures, exploring new ways of completing tasks I thought I knew, and doing a little bit of teaching.
While I was there, I got to know ten wonderful Ghanaian teenagers, and one young adult, called scholars in the TOB program. They're the students that this program sponsors and works most intensively with. You can read more about them here, find them on Facebook, or read this entry in my blog!

I spent a lot of time learning about the ocean with Valentina and Henry, but I worked with all of the TOB scholars while I was there.
While on the beach, Valentina taught me how to kill sand crabs, and Henry taught me how to make sure they were big enough to eat.
I helped Anthony organize the library for the after school program, and then we decided to organize the one upstairs for the scholars and volunteers. It was interesting to come to a compromise about how we should organize the books - size, author, topic, title, or what! We ended up doing a little of each.
Henry also helped me learn how to cook so what comes out looks nice. I can cut carrots well now, with all the practice I got when he made me do it over after I messed up!
