Me as a Reader
Black Feminist Thought
As a feminist, I feel it's my duty to understand how this movement is both helpful and oppressive. One of the ways I do this is by reading 'other' feminisms, such as Black Feminism, Womanism, or Third-World Feminism. As an historically white, middle-class women's movement, Western feminism tends to exclude women whose experiences and goals differ from this one. Not all women have the same experiences, and this book is a good reminder of that. One should always be aware of their own blind spots and privileges.
Ellen Hopkins, Author
As a young adult literature author, Ellen Hopkins makes life real between the pages of her books. Whether she's exploring the effects of crystal meth, how prostitution becomes a lifestyle, or the reality of mental health disorders, Hopkins makes real life explicit in terms teenagers can understand. Mostly written in poetic forms, her novels don't follow a 'script' for happy endings. Instead, she appeals to the lived realities I have been learning about in my teacher education classes to connect with readers, offering both hope and tragedy for her audience.
